Music is U

Established in 2011 by Carlehr Swanson, Music is U began as a heartfelt response to the isolation experienced by residents in rehabilitation centers—an experience made personal by Carlehr’s grandmother’s recovery from a fractured back. Noticing the lack of visitors for many residents, Carlehr started by offering personal musical performances, singing and playing piano, to bring comfort and connection.

This initial act of compassion sparked a larger mission. Carlehr expanded her efforts by organizing group performances and presentations on the power of music with classmates, sharing the healing and unifying effects of music with nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and rehabilitation centers. Music is U grew into a respected outreach program, delivering high-quality music performances and educational presentations to over 70 schools across Virginia and numerous care facilities.

Today, Music is U empowers students to carry forward this legacy. Through workshops, performances, and presentations, young people learn popular songs while exploring music’s unique ability to unite and inspire. The program cultivates musical skills, leadership, and empathy, encouraging students to perform and share the message of music’s power with families, schools, and neighborhoods. By combining music education with meaningful outreach, Music is U helps students realize their power to foster connection, break down barriers, and uplift communities through the universal language of music.
